Very new beginner of Maya ask modeling question

Hey, I am very new to Maya and I tried to follow the lessons online but I got something confused. It is the extruding polygon part and I don't know why I got the surface rendering of the lower part like this:

I don't know why there is a ball like surface inside and I think it would be polygons surface. Could any one tell me where to change this?

Another question is how to select the inside surface of this lower part since the lesson asks to remove them.

Thank you and I will be very appreciate for your help

Looks like you may have knocked '2' on the keyboard. Hit '1' and this should sort you out.
