Terraformed Mars Concept

Started on this yesterday. Not sure what color the water would actually look like on Mars.

Rendered in Vue 10 Infinite. Stars were done using Glitterato.

Here is an update. Added haze in Vue Infinite. Reduced the terrain height.

Some more refinements made. Added cloud shadows in Vue Infinite. No postwork.

Nice work, its looking good. The last version has lost a little bit of the definition, but does have a slightly more natural feel. Remember when you are wondering what water would look like on Mars you also need to ask what Mars would look like with water. In other words, would water spark vegetative life in other areas (or if it is being terraformed, would we have introduced vegetation?)
Look good, keep at it

True. My art style begins with an exaggerated subject which I then slowly refine into something approaching a more realistic scene. I reduced the terrain's displacement (in the last shot) which increased the scale of the planet. The green in the image is just a diffuse color that is driven by the heightmap. The water, clouds, and haze are separate spheres. I haven't decided yet on the actual vegetation. For ground level renders, I know I'll have some trees based on the Martian Chronicles. I did a walkthrough video for this scene at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1Lcc4fPCAk

Here's another shot.

New Mars becomes a near Earth object. Updated my old Earth model for this scene.

Not sure how you'd go about rendering this, but keep in mind that Mars' vertical scale is more than 9x the Earth's. I've not read the Martian Chronicles, but I read Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson, and one could consider those three books the definitive work on the topic! Perhaps they're the Chronicles you were referring to?
