Rock in the Road :: Production Focus

Hey there!

This message-filled short 'Rock in the Road' was created over five years under the control of several years of students and mentors. Check this Vimeo Editor's Choice production and read their story. Click the image, then come back to comment.

I've read that the render was vRay under Maya, so, why is the render so noisy?

Cheers.

Congrats to everyone involved, and to all those who weren't mentioned in the article! Great job, everyone!

I was privileged with the opportunity to help work on this a few summers back. It's great to see it finally done! Congrats to everyone who helped make this possible.

The noise looks like it was added in the post process. Maybe it's supposed to simulate film grain.
Apparently, the vimeo compression didnīt like the noise very much. The quality of the video suffers because of it.

Michael Hutchinson - Tangent sculpt system - Where ?

At the end of this article there is a note:

“I’d say that our tangent sculpt system for cleanup was pretty unique. It was originally built by Michael Hutchinson (2006 graduate working at Dreamworks). That tool allows us to put a corrective blend shape at the end of the deformer stack, but manipulate that target in world space."

which referes to the following image I guess

Does anyone know wether this tool is publicly available somewhere ?

Any hint where to find it ?

Very nice short, has a nice message to it..

I also think the noise is sometimes disturbing, and what i dont understand is why is it that certain shots seem to have clear problems (at least to me they were clear) and the producers/animators didnt seem to see them...an example is at the end when the guy that starts clapping, his Shirt is clearly overlaping in the left sleeve...

I really liked the character design though.. very nice! the kid the old guy and the elephant to me were the best ones .

Congrats!

Here is a *very* old mel version of the tool.

We use a plugin version. It was written for 2010, so the UI needs some work in 2012. I'd be happy to share the plugin, given that you're comfortable working around the current glitches. PM me and I'll send it. I'll be updating the UI in the next few weeks and would consider posting.

Some noise was added as a post process, but unfortunately the Vimeo recompression made it worse. Looking back, it was too heavy handed, as the output from vray was pretty clean.

The problems definitely aren't invisible. If you read the story, this was a case of finish, knowing we could have done better, or abandon the project.

It's an issue of little mistakes compounding as they move down the line. A small issue with a rig, leads to a issue with animation, leads to trouble with the sim, to interpenetrating geo... Not that it's an excuse, but we didn't have the manpower to push back up the pipeline to make the proper fix, and the timeline meant those folks that could help fix it had moved on.

So it makes us sad on one hand knowing that it has errors, but we're happy that some folks connect with what we were able to finish. We've taken the lessons to heart, and have limited the scope on subsequent projects so we can keep the quality more consistent.

Thanks for the feedback!

I have sent you directly through cgtalk my email for you to share the plugin you mention, but I haven't received your reply yet.

I was wondering, wether you may share it here to public so that the community may take advance of it.

May we expect your feedback on this soon ?

Best Regards,
Tri
