are you talking about the iray renderer?

i dont know
can it work with other engines ?

for GPU rendering, no

rendering engines are either CPU only or GPU only. The possible exception is an AMD APU that I guess can be crossfired with the GPU to use with GPU rendering, but I honestly don't know much about it.

Also LuxRender. They don't don't have to be one or the other, but most are probably because it simplifies development. As far as Max goes for the original poster if you want more rendering performance either use iray (which uses the GPU) if you can live with the limitations or it might be time to upgrade the processor (and/or memory and motherboard) if you're running older hardware.
