I've been (and still am) a longtime MR user but I'll agree with the rest of the people saying Vray is damn brilliant. It's better out of the box (but you can't get as creative with complex ray tracing ops), it's still slow for some things (volumetrics, nurbs) but there are some wicked nice tools, I love the vray blend material, it's logical and easy to use, as it the pass system. I even like vray's IPR (vray RT) it's blazing fast and great for lookdev.

The place I work at is now moving towards maxwell and vray, MR is anything but dead (or only used for old projects). We do sometimes used maya software for the odd job =)

I think for MR it's a case of too little too late. I'm still pretty renderer-agnostic, so who knows, the next version could blow my mind!

I've used mental ray, 3delight, vray, pixar renderman studio all very thoroughy. I started using Arnold. I prefer it because it's retard-friendly.

I made the switch to both V-Ray and Arnold this year from MR and I could not be any happier with the decision.

Example of perhaps?

Because whenever I try it it's either dead slow, or crashing all the time.
