Can you try not scaling the sphere, but using stretch modifier on it. What happens?

tried it and still got the big reflections..i guess they are the normal reflections. Oh well.

What if you try adding more segments horizontally so that the polygons are more square? Also you shouldn't scale in world, you should always try to scale in vertex or poly mode.
