It is but it will only project onto the top or the bottom. Not vertical.

OK, then help. How, for example, on the box to get something like a top-boot material depends on the height of the objects?
For example, 10% of the height is blue, then yellow next 15% of the height etc?

Add a Planar UVW mapping, align it vertically.

Apply a gradient ramp to the diffuse slot, set the interpolation to solid, add and adjust the flags for the colors.
