spaceship rigging

Hi,

I am very new to Maya so please explain your answers or point me towards tutorials

Basically i have created a helicopter/spaceship/flying vehicle thing and i want to rig it. (I have added a picture). What i want is for the scorpion tale at the back to be able to unravel so its streight out and then role back to scorpion angles and then move around like a real stinger.

I dont know how hard that is but have no idea where to start. I tried adding joints but that didn't work out. Please help!

This will get you started. Joints can be used for mechanical rigging but you have to start thinking of them not as skinning objects but transforms used for pivot points.
