Temple Of Knowledge | Matte Painting/Composite, David Luong (2D)

Title: Temple Of Knowledge | Matte Painting/Composite
Name: David Luong
Country: United States
Software: After Effects, Maya, Photoshop

* UPDATED 10/15/2004 *
- changed perspective on the greek columns
- I've changed the waterfall color and brightness to more orange per the environment, and gave it more detail. Also added a "shoreline" to the right mountain of the temple to give it better integration. Also tweaked the reflections slightly to match the shoreline. Thanks all for the comments and crits!

Hey all!
I just finished this digital matte painting for matte painting class. For this assignment, find images of shrines/temples, and make an environment for the shrine to make it not of a particular origin and culture. Fantasy type setting.
Preliminary composite done in Photoshop, then animated and multi-planed in After Effects with the leaves and waterfall done with Maya Particles. Mesh Warping on the tree and branches, and turbulent/displacement maps on the clouds and water for animation.
Full video resolution Divx 5.1 4000kbs compression with 128kbs mp3 audio to retain high quality viewing.
Screenshots, animation and the making of video below, hope you guys enjoy!

The overall looks great! the only thing that bothers me on that image are the water falls, they are too white! try to color them more with that orange evironment color.

tour work is good but i note a few problems in this picture.
girst, the water is too white and lack of details. You don't need much but your water must seem to have the same level of details than the rest of the picture. The second point i note is a problem with the reflection of the artificial part, it doesn't seem to correspond to the relief you made and harm to the integration by making me feel the relief "fly" above the water.

hope it will help you.

Nice lighting, I love the atmosphere of it all...
Only crit: darken the waterfalls...match them closer to the water they're flowing into.

Wow.. it looks really dramatic.. great lighting and mood.. My only problem with the painting is the perspective of the temple doesn't look quite right...
