instances and primary visibility

Quick question,

I have an scene with hundreds of instanced geometry. Is there a way to select some of these instances and turn their visibility off without affecting all of them?

Nevermind, I forgot I could get it done by unchecking "Derive from Maya" box on mental ray flags attributes.
