Nobody is suggesting that those who are currently below the professional average quit the industry, I understand, but cannot see where, people pick this elitism notion up.
D-K is about failing to appraise one's level of knowledge and skill is common between the incompetent, and how it leads to stagnation, and how it seems to be getting more frequent.
Nobody with a knowledge of the above would tell you to quit doing CG because you're clearly not there. They'd tell you that you're not there YET, and therefore should work more or harder, or both, if you want to achieve the levels that (assuming you were blind to your work's level of quality) you'd erroneously assume it was at.
It's far from wanting to create a divide, it's wanting to gap that divide so that more people appreciate how hard the craft is, so that mastery doesn't become depreciated.
It's all, in fact, about the actual opposite of what you imply. Whether through discouragment or PC-ness, the result is the same, and it's the one Leigh is concerned about: If enough people stop understanding how hard it is, it will lose its value, because not enough people will be left around to appreciate it.
In actuality, for the masters of the craft you think want to isolate themselves to be perceived as such (masters), it takes a large percentage of the population to have more than rudimentary knowledge of the field/arts.
That is why K Perry is venerated by millions, and only a small subset of the population made of talented musicians truly idolizes someone like Satriani. Satriani's ideal world would include billions of musically talented (enough) people that can appreciate what kind of magic tricks he's actually playing. K Perry's ideal world revolves around everybody remaining ignorant enough to not see the gigantic vacuum behind the paper cut figure.
