Vray layered texture goes nuts!

Hi gang!
I have some irritating issues with this eye rendering.
As you can see in the model I have two UV-sets, therefore using 2 textures. Thought that was kinda bright
I modeled it, set up the connection and it works fine when rendered in the scene it was created. Then I exported the mesh to open up by itself to tweak under lighter conditions and also to use for for any character in the future.

However, when rendering, look how it turns out
To stress, I do not have these issues in the original scene.

I've fiddled with the connections, broke them to set 'em up again, but nothing works.
Would anyone have an idea of what's going on here? Can I use another approach with layered textures? Vray doesn't seem to have one of its own.
I guess I could use the approach of two meshes with ramp transparency as in that gnomon video if there are no other solution, but fiddling with transparency just seems weird to me. From a poorly chosen angle, wouldn't you risk seeing into the eye?

Resorted to an explicit approach using Mental Ray for the raytracing capabilities, but the rest is just maya nodes, well except for the MR IBL. Using lightlinking, IBL, and a common arealight for the square highlight to get what I was after and only using maya materials - phong, surface shader. Seems pretty crazy though to setup the eyes to render in such a controlled form, but I couldn't achieve any similar effect in VRay...
and I guess at the end of the day, it don't matter much.

Voilą mes amis!
