Texture based blend shapes

I have a simple model where the face consists of a simple texture. I basically want to be able to animate that texture in a similar way to blend shape animation. Like if I have one texture for a smile, one for sad, etc, etc... and I want to animate between them. In some low poly games they have texture based facial animation, how can i do this?

Its not purely texture based BS. Its flat shapes with textures rendered and projected on the characters face. Search in youtube for Lego facial animation.
