I would recommend Vue as well. Even though it's a '3D' Software, the learning curve isn't too bad and it's quite fun to build up an eco-System and modify the look of your entire planet.

And the price shouldn't be a problem. There's a FREE learning edition of the full version of Vue, and the stripped-down versions start at around 100 bucks.

+1. I started with Esprit 11 and added modules as my experience and needs grew. There are also a bazillion tutorials, both paid and free, to help with the learning curve.

I enjoy blowing things up and the particle systems help there. Still having trouble with my tornado, though...

Thank you all for the great advice.

I would like to do it in 3D. What I want to do is like a 360 fly around with a camera when finished. Yes it's a long way there but I have time and I usually invest a lot of it in my hobby .

I would have access to Maya/3ds as I work at an university.

Can Photoshop make 3D images?

BTW thanks to the moderators for letting this thread through although I'm asking for "which software to use".

I would say that Terragen is your best bet. It's the only software that is based about a sphere. Check out the planets tab on my website www.richardfraser.co.uk and you'll see some planets I have made.
If you get the animation version then you can fly about them and every aspect can be animated. Potentially you could animate a planet from a boiling mas of molten rock to a green and pleasant land. Clouds can be animated too.
