Sidenote: I deal a lot with different developers and they see and hear what goes on. The current solutions need refinement. A more simplified approach in handling settings. In the meantime there are some easier ways to accomplish some things now.

Take a look at the blog in my signature and search for: Native IBL. That post explains most everything. Keep in mind portal lights are still used for indoor renders.

But for scenes lit mostly by HDRI, this works easily. The lighting cache is explained in the post.

By the way on first view of the Native IBL I was real interested in it. I had no idea how it related to flicker free animation until this thread though. And then I read your blog again.

Would have saved a lot of time had I simply known it was a brute force method and the fact that the "No Cache" setting was the FG brute in Maya.

Somehow these two things really need more attention because I have never seen that anywhere in threads on flicker free animation. I am kind of surprised that it was not even mentioned. Took me two days or more to figure it out.

And your blog is great. Gonna read it again and see what I pick up this time.

Wow. Holy crap. 3 pages. My scene was 9/10ths rendered when I opened the thread. I did a test before the rendering was completed and was left scratching my head viewing the results. I was considering re-rendering but a deadline is looming. Wish I had started the thread sooner.

So the biggest problem for me was my character had short fur. Light setup included detailed shadow maps and Puppet's SpotTK as the light shader. My samples was a little too low so it was partially to blame for the flickering even in the short test I did with FG off. Crap.

My solution was to use Neat Video's Noise Reducer plugin for After Effects. Puuurrrrrfect. I can't believe the results. Also considering that fur is highly detailed in itself and could be interpreted as noise to many basic filters. But 99% of all detail remains and all flicker is gone. As a bonus the loss of detail came with slight blurring which made the fur appear soft and alive and not CG-like. Kudos to those guys. They got me out of a jam.

But I will take all the information here in this thread with the highest level of appreciation! This is invaluable and I will use it for next render! (If there is one, of course, hopefully it's my last with mentalray!)
