scaling fcurves by negative amounts

Hi - bug, limitation or user error?

I want to reverse an animation, keeping the fcurves intact, so a section of the animation plays in reverse. Simple right, use the Region Tool in the timeline? Nope, you end up with bad tangents:

OK - maybe functions->scale in the timeline, with -1 as the scale, and an offset? Nope, the fcurves get mangled and worse - some keyframes get deleted.

OK, so jump to key frame mode and pull the in/out frames over eachother? Nope, even worse the tangents get squeezed to zero on the x-axis:

Only way I can see is to add a time track. Which is a big old drag. Any clues?

Cheers - Chris
