I thought of the hard edges too. But then you said you tried the slice Modifier first which screwed the rig and i thought, well, that would cause hard edges too
I can see the benefit of the gradient, but it seems quite a lot of effort compared to slicing or clipping planes
Just a thought: If you clone you're mesh and put a Point Cache on it you should be able to animate the rigged one, record the point cache and should be able to apply it to the clone and slice that one
