Alrighty, so this idea has been floating around in my head for a while. I just started putting together the base mesh.

The deal with this guy is that he has a high point of view and a very flexible neck that he uses to spot out prey. His body is a lot like a praying mantis because I think there are interesting. His mouth is hidden in his chest cavity. When he is ready to scoop up a meal he unlatches those flaps and extends his mouth out.

I'm still deciding if need to add another appendage to him. At this point he works as a predator since his mouth can extend far and is quick, but maybe he needs a set of arms up front to pin his prey.

The sculpt needs work. Need to pick out a color pallet. Oh yeah and "teeth" for the chest hatch as well as the mouth. I have some seams that I need to take care of as well.

Threw down my base color. Put a quick rig on it. I worked on the sculpt, I'll post a render in a bit. Time to move on to the texture! Still need to model teeth as well.

Some renders - playing with shader. Time to texture.

Oh yeah, and I need to decide what I want to do with the eyes. I think I want to make them like cat/reptile eyes.

A little work with the texture

I like it, especially how you got the textures laid out just right to make it look realistic. It looks very organic and the curves seem to flow just right to not show any sort of break from the rest of the model. The only critique I would have, with my eyes, anyways, is the chest cavity. It seems to stick out a bit, mostly the creases towards the top and bottom, to where it seems to take away from the flow of the rest of the model. I think it would be neat to see it a bit more "melded" into the front of the creature, mostly to look more natural.

Right now, I would say the chest cavity reminds me more of a wooden cupboard and less of a chest creature. But, that's just my opinion and view on it. Great job, nonetheless.

Yeah you're right about the chest. I'm going to add some "teeth" to it and if that doesn't help I'll revisit my sculpt

Well now I need to edit the texture the make the teeth fit more. I'll just do that in Mudbox though. Like a 10 minute fix.

Next step is to texture the internals and model the mouth teeth. I might edit the bump map to to make it look like he has ribs leading up to the cage teeth.

Some more texture work to do. I haven't even really touched the mouth things yet. I like the eyes being kind of cloudy and ambiguous.

Okay, I have to call this guy done - gotta move onto the next project. I had a lot of fun modelling and rigging him! He'll be put to use shortly.

Why stop here? You have such a great start? Of the your work that I have seen this one I think I like the best.

Thanks! Well I just want to keep moving on because I'm building assets for a short film and I do not want to spend too much time on one particular character or prop. I may revisit this project eventually though, as I often do...

What do you think I could improve on or change?
