If you replace ALL the reflections on the object, then it doesn't matter. At that point you may as well replace the entire object.

well, not exactly.... images projected on dummy geo provide "actual depth", so a rough(blurred) reflection would reflect closer objects differently (sharper in this case)... but its true in most cases an hdri does the job....
