Deleting Scene Materials

I have seen this question pop up before - but no one ever really has an answer. I am trying to delete old materials in my scene. I have deleted all material slots and even changed the material of all materials to one flat one in attempt to purge the other materials. Still - when I look in my scene materials I still see the old (large) textures.

So - I'm stumped. How do I get rid of all of those bitmaps. Aside from the bitmaps, I also want to clear all of the checkerboard bitmaps that come from the unwrap modifiers?

I have attached an image explaining what I mean.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

They are maps not materials which means they can be assigned to objects through modifiers etc... ie the Displace modifier might have a texturemap plugged into it, thus it shows up in the scenematerials. Maps can also appear in render settings and environment settings, and also the background images of viewports.
