Definitely at some point someone either at Disney or Pixar (or these days... both) felt that those 4 directors recently were not going to make "good product".

They weren't going to make the "right movie"... I'd still like to believe that Pixar's Lasseter, and others.. the "core team" as it were, still have their hearts set on that "right movie".

The problem would be that it's the SAME "right movie" every time.

Sure, they defied Disney's template of Romance + 3 songs. But what they've done ever since is basically "Films about Self-Assurance and the value of Friendship especially between people who don't get along at first."

One day, their own writers and directors will feel that is old. And they will want to do something else. But the "old guard" the guys who built the empire by going with THEIR gut, will continue to go by THEIR gut - and shoot down anything that doesn't conform to that.

It's a very tough nut to crack, cause you need to be extremely open-minded (to the point of seeming like you have no principles of your own) to properly sit through say.. the pitch for "Resident Evil 6" and then go straight from that and sit through the pitch of "The Incredibles 2".... and not let your own biases in and say: "This is crap! You're off the movie!"
