SM 02_2013 Clothing

Hello and welcome to the Speed Modelling Challeng calender week two 2013.

Thanks for joining us.

Every callender week we will do a new Speed Modelling. So there will be a bunch of 52 challenging Speed Modelling sessions throughout the year for you to participate. They will eather start on Sunday (evening) or Monday (as we all live in different countries, with different time zones).
There is also no restriction. If you liked a previous theme better than the actual you can also participate in that again.

I figured that when applying to jobs for modelling they frequently ask how fast you are. Modelling is not all about Hard Surfaces and you should also be "speedy" when it comes to organic modelling. The humanoid/robot-theme went well last year, so I figured we should do some organic themes.
So to make it not too complicated - as there are allways ones who are fresh to modelling. We will do body parts in this series of SMCs.

The first SMC was all about cute faces, so to take our modelling process forward and have in the end a whole character we will dedicate this week to clothing. After that we will have a week for hands and feets and for bodies (without clothing).

You can modell and/or sculpt clothing but please watch the edgeflow - since our character should be suitable for animation.

It is up to you to decide what kind of clothing you would like to do. You can go freestyle and imagine clothing, or you can pick a given design or charcter and model his clothings. In both ways you will need references. If you participated in the Cute Face-SMC you could also model suitable clothes for your characters face.

So, last but not least: Have fun!

ok, here what I made so far. As I really never get to work without distractions I can't really tell how many hours I spend on this one. Saying 5 to 8 hours would be ok (only for the clothing - the head is from the previous SMC).

Nice work sundaynights.

I am caught up with work these days so I made something real quick, apologize about that. I feel it is better to do something than nothing though.
I made mine with a basic mannikin built with skin modifier and then applied a clothing simulation on it from a basic mesh built above the skin.

cloth on mannikin, 15 minutes.

Hey whom, thank you.
You're right better than doing nothing! When I try cloth-simulation my PC nearly crashes and when I render it, something goes terribly wrong somehow and it will lock like the clothes are spikes going out of the body or something like that.
If you like the theme you can still model some more clothing when you got more time on your hands.

I think most folds of movies at pixar are simulations or blendshapes - I am not sure if the little folds on agnes pants are bumpmap or modelled... I would love to see the actual wireframe of those 3D-chars used at pixar and dreamworks - they get never shown in the making of's!

Right now I am collecting reference from Up by whatching the movie - love it! So his clothing will be next - they have a few more major folds that are surely modelled in.

again noone else, hu? This feels a lil bit like my own private WIP right now...

The clothes from Carl wasn't so interesting, so I decided to finish a different Model.
This is Sophie from Tales of Graces f. I love the Game Design so I went on modelling their staff. Sophie is the first finished though. I am somehow not speedy with Softimage...

Hope you like her - after making the pictures I recognized the break between upper and lower arm and changed it to a straight line.
