How to paint reflective metal texture for diffuse map?

I need to know how people are so good at making their diffuse maps look like realistic shining metal. A shiny hubcap for example--how do people make it look real?? (I'm painting something for a game that doesn't support direct environmental reflections.)

I think metals can be tricky sometimes, but mostly I just paint mine using source images. Photos go a long way!

Metal requires glossy reflections and nearly no diffuse. To fake it you have a high contrast with black relecting nothing and the bright spots reflecting the light source. Very important is that metal specular is tinted to the diffuse color. Aluminum will have a brighter diffuse and chrome will have a near black diffuse.
