Growing Vines/beanstalk

Hey guys

I need to create a growing beanstalk... ala Jack and the beanstalk style.
Twisted branches growing with vines and leaves shooting out and so on

Here is a reference on how I would like it to look:
http://www.luxology.com/modo_601_su...parkerbiley.jpg

And here is a reference on how it should relatively grow. I would like it to burst more out of the ground though, so grow with more vigor:

Check from around the 12:30 mark in the clip.

Heres a little more information on that clip:

I can more than likely model something similar to the vines in the reference image, but it wont work for animation purposes.

I have done something similar in the past for growing vines, but the vines were thin, using a plane with a path deform and a volume select with a Xform (to get the pointed tip or the sense that it grows from small to big) But im having a hard time figuring out how I'm going to get leaves sprouting out and how to get a few separate vines twisting around each other without any way to do collision detection.

Any one have Ideas, or any brainstorming that could help out?
All help is GREATLY appreciated

Have you looked into growfx ? It's been a while since I used it, but you have complete control over everything. It might take a bit to understand all the variables, but you can keyframe all the growth.

I have been taking a look at grow ivy but I dont think that will help for the main thick vines. for sure for the leaves and offshoot branches, and for extra pieces curling around the vines.

will look into GrowFX but will it be able to do thick vines?

Yeah, it should have no problem doing thick vines. I think it would be capable of growing a thick vine and having smaller vines sprout from it. The only drawback is that you would need to invest some time into learning, it has LOTS of variables. It is less of a 'make tree' tool and more of a 'make custom organic growth' tool.

Here is a tutorial on growing vines, I think the same principle would still apply to your main, giant vine.
