I am not sure using subd's in maya is the best method for adding details such as wrinkles on the lips and fingernails. I typically model the general shape in polys in maya and don't go overboard with poly count.

Then using a software like z-brush or Mudbox, I subdivide the geometry to the desired resolution and apply all those small details there. Using a displacement map or vector displacement map from one of these softwares will allow you to get the detailed information onto your low poly object in maya at render time. You will just need to apply an "Approximation Editor" to your low poly object, and set the value equal to the amount of subdivisions between your low poly object and the highest subdivision level used for the displacement map. The Approximation Editor can be applied to a selected object by navigating to Windows>Rendering Editor>Mental Ray>Approximation Editor. Use the "Subdivisions (Polygon and Subd. Surfaces)" section.
