How to create a morphing effect in maya?

I'm looking to create this kind of effect..

Using Morph Targets might work for much of that, but there's also a lot of compositing going on to make that video seem fluid and smooth. Especially when it gets to the fluids and particle dynamics. It also appears to involve rendertime booleans, which are old-school but pretty useful. I doubt this was rendered in "one shot", however.

Lots of blendshapes with particle goals and isomesh. My guess.
