Yes, all of those game were chock full of carnage. Many of them were also quite fantastical if not completely cartoonish. The difference is that modern FPS games are much more realistic and also depict the violence from your vantage point. My upstairs neighbor plays Medal of Duty or something similar for hours at a time, the bass of the explosions makes it sound in my apartment as if there is a war happening just miles from my home. Could there be a psychological side effect to prolonged simulation of such a grim scenario? Is it healthy to spend hours hiding behind virtual cover identifying every human silhouette as a target?

The DoD couldn't figure why the US were losing so many soldiers in Korea until they discovered our soldiers were less likely to fire their weapons. They solved the problem by switching from "bullseye" targets to human silhouettes. Using human looking targets in training produced soldiers who were less adverse to firing their weapons in combat.
