Thumbs up SpaceMarine - but how ?!

Hey guys,

like many of you I'm playing StarCraft II and I'm very impressed of the SpaceMarine models. They are looking so powerfull.
So searching the www for other interpretation of the SpaceMarine I found a few which had been made with Zbrush in cooporation with XSI or 3DsMax.

for example:

At the moment I'm a happy Maya user and I would really like to create my own SpaceMarine with Maya and maybe (the details) with Zbrush.

So far so well but my problem now,... I just created easy robots, vfx etc... but no highquality models... My question now,... do you know some tutorials (no ones by gnomon, i searched there already) which would help me?!

The whole way from my first poly to the final movie ...
Maya to create model
export to zbrush for details
import back to maya
create skeleton in maya
animation in maya
rendering with renderman for maya or maybe with mentalray
postproduction in nuke
sound in premiere....

what do you think about the work-pipeline ???

Here is a good hard surface tutorial that has been linked here before:

He breaks down the techniques involved. At the end, he shows a model similar to the SCII space marine which was made using the techniques he outlines. Although he uses Max, the same tools can be found in Maya such as extrude, bevel, etc. Instead of applying turbosmooth, you just hit 3 in Maya to preview smoothed meshes.

hey thanks for this link ... the "tutorial link"-threads are sooooo big... with > 55 pages they are very confusing.

i will watch this tutorial tomorrow... if you know some other tuts, post it please
it is very interesting that there are so many tutorials for max, xsi or zbrush out there, but just a few highquality tutorials for maya... hmm ok,... i will reply after watching this tutorial the next days...

The closest thing gnomon has would be Vitaly Bulgarov's DVD - the guy that created the 2nd marine:

While the dvd is a great showcase of his workflow, he doesnt go in-depth with hard surface techniques, unlike Grant's tutorials.

yea I also found this tutorial and I agree with you. It looks quite usefull.

@ psyk0 do you think it would be better to watch first the gnomon and snd. the vimeo one ?
to learn at first the over-all workflow and than go in-depth ?

Personally i would go with vimeo first, the technical video will give you a great base for modeling hard surfaces and you won't be scratching your head when you see Vitaly do his work.

ok nice idea. I bought the DVD but - because I'm from suisse I have to wait long time so it fits perfectly to watch the vimeo video first

Vitaly's DVD is awesome, but you should really have some experience before you can get a benefit from watching it, he works blazing fast, so even with experience you are left thinking "what did just happen there?"

And I just saw the vimeo video, it is a really good introduction.
