Advice for Chimera

hi, all. I did Chimera character sketch and will be glad to hear your opinions about how to polish it. Do you have ideas about sharp painting techniques?

This look pretty good. Your highlights and your cast shadows don't seem to agree with each other though. You need to be consistent in how you light the figure. Decide where exactly your light source(s) are and then be consistent about it.

Watch out for accidental readability issues. For example, the cast shadow near her crotch area in the front lines up with he snake tail in the back, making it look like the tail is coming out from her front.

Why is there a pale blue halo all around the character? What purpose does it serve?

Yes it's always hard for me to be consisten.

Different figure from background. This is concept not illustration so I didn't want to insert it in background.

I dig what you got.

I like the design. I would say that you need to consider the direction the light is coming from.

Another approach is to have the top of the character lighter and bottom darker, it's kinda a generic lighting approach but it can be effective.

Right now your character colors only shows "local color" (actual object color) and high lights (reflective color), which is an important definitions to understand, but there is more to light behavior than that. A traditionally effective lighting scenario would show very little local color, some rim lighting and possible area's that fade into shadow.

Another way to find ways to improve it is to find another artist work, or photograph that has the look and feel of what your going for and try to match the lighting.
