Volume Material environmental lighting

Can Blender Volume Materials take environmental lighting or do I have to make my own?

I have discovered that Volume Materials in Blender do not respond to environmental Light or indirect lighting

Which renderer are you using? Blender Internal can produce volumetric lights through the lamp itself. Cycles at this moment cant, but there's a hack using Motion Blur and moving planes.. Crude but works.

You could check out at for more help

That hack worked for Lightwave for a long time and can be very effective.
Basically, you take several planes and a 3D procedural texture in 'world' mode then vibrate the planes. The motion blur smooths the edges giving the volumetric illusion.

Without blur, it can also be effective to create "voxel" style grass.
