Concept Art vs Matte Painting

How do you guys define concept art vs matte painting? In what ways are those 2 mediums different?

Concept art is when the artist designs what everything in an I.P. is supposed to look like (except UI), such as the characters, the environments, vehicles, creatures, weapons, props, etc. Concept artists who are strong in visual storytelling are also sometimes tasked with visual development/story art type of illustration concept art, which are meant to convey specific scenes of action, drama, mood, etc, as opposed to purely design.

Matte painting is when the artist paints a static background image that is used in the film/TV show that creates the illusion of looking like it's real, but actually doesn't exist in reality, or is too expensive or inconvenient to build the set in real life. It's basically like an illusion. In animation and video games that are more stylized, the matte paintings don't have to look real--they simply have to match the visual style of the I.P., but the idea is the same--they save money because it's one still image instead of building an elaborate 3D set.

As a note there is often cross-over in both fields from artists and extra skills that are also associated with each field. Times they are a-changing...

For example a lot of concept artists for film will also do matte painting when needed and many matte painters will also have skills with projection, texturing and comp as these are follow on skills often used by matte painters to enhance their environments.

Basically a matte painting has to look 'real'. A concept painting, although many times it does, doesn't have to. You always see matte paintings on the screen but you rarely see concept work.
