"The Longest Day"

You have 45 mn for your your sketch. IF you go beyond the assigned time limit , you have to post
* WHATEVER you have done after the time has expired, along with the FINAL drawing.
* You may post a drawing at ANY TIME, but if you wish to be eligible for the Sketch of the Week,
it must be finished at least a week after the topic has been posted.
* You may also re-post a copy of your finished drawing a this forum:

* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread.
* They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 1024 x 1024.
NOTE: The forum WILL RESIZE your image. but you may post a direct link to a high resolution version of your drawing

I would say around 30mins. It wasnt this suppose to be this dark.. I should check the work always with other monitor too.

Sazem. Actually the lighting on your piece looks pretty good on my monitor. I'm assuming you're talking about the black and white values. Feng Zhu uses a method of using a saturation layer set to solid black that saturates all the colors, to where on layers below it; you can set the mode to either color dodge or multiply to correct the light/shadows by hand. It's worked pretty well for me. This was 53 minutes:

Yeah actually I was talking exactly those values. My home monitor shows dark area as gray not black. After I went to work, where I have monitor aimed for graphical designing, it looked way more darker than I was thinking in first place.

Now I have another old monitor in my home, so I double check the values in the end.
And actually I like now that it is darker than I initially thought, it fits better the "mood" hehe

I think I have seen Feng Zhu`s video from youtube. He places a solid black layer above everything and sets it to color to show only "light and shadow" values in the painting?
Great tip btw.. gotta try that my self too.

and btw, its been really great to see that you have been really active in sketching in here! We really need more people in here and I believe that if we are active enought, that will encourage new people to join too!

I calibrated my monitors using the guidelines from Ballistic Publishing:

"Monitor gamma and colour settings vary considerably. We will be reviewing all images on a standard system that is representative of most computer systems and is also optimised for print reproduction.

We will be reviewing and preparing all images on a monitor with sRGB colour response and a gamma of 2.2.We have provided a monitor calibration image (colour calibrate gamma 2_2.jpg) to help you set up your monitor. You MUST display this image at 100% in a program that does NOT alter the gamma (not Photoshop). We have provided the image as a 100% quality JPG image so that you can view it in any web browser.

You should adjust you monitor controls so that the difference between the solid and dithered areas are minimal. Ideally you should be able to make all the solid squares match the surrounds -- however this is not possible on most monitors in which case you should adjust your monitor so that most of the mid range is matched. You should sit back from the monitor and squint to blur your vision to best judge the match.

You should do all adjustments on your monitor if you can. If you have a choice you should not adjust your graphics card gamma or any other software controls unless you have an ATI Raedon, NVIDIA FX or other card with FLOATING POINT display buffer. The reason for this is that there is just not enough resolution in 8 bits (24 bit RGB graphics buffer) to permit adjustment of gamma response without seriously degrading the shadow detail".
