Maya 2013.5 Zbrush Vector Displacment Issue

Maya 2013.5 Zbrush Vector Displacment Issue

Hey everyone.

Hope i placed this in the right sub-forum.

After a few days of hair pulling, trial and error, I need to seek advice from the community. =)

I'm currently working on my small shortfilm and just finished my main character in Zbrush 4R4.
Now I wish to transfere the model into Maya 2013.5 from Zbrush 4R4, with the details as Vector Displacment maps.

After countless of tries, tutorials and reading, I had no luck, I had to figure out what was wrong, then I found this:

How to setup the whole "Zbrush Diagnostic Files", I figured if I could get this to work probably, it would be a good start, But I can't get my diagnostic file to create a "perfect sphere",

instead mine looks like this:


I'm using Zbrush 4R4 and Maya 2013.5 (Mental Ray)

I exported the Diagnostic files from Zbrush's tool palette.

My shader network inside Maya is a "Lambert" with a displacement node linked into the ShaderEngine as a Vector Displacement.



I hope someone can give me the golden trick, Please let me know if you want more info.

if you have access to mudbox i recommend to bake your maps in mud... i know this it not what a zbrush user want to do, but its working... mudbox is a great texture and baking tool...

Good idea Oglu, I watched a few videos of that progress, and it looks quite easy to go into.
Will definitely try that =)


Will skip the whole Zbrush exporting thing, and go Mudbox way for now.

U sure u connected outRGB and not outAlpha to the displacement shader?
It worked for me.

I probably messed up somewhere =( But following others do the exact same thing gives me this weird result.
Ill try to write what I do in steps, I might miss something.

I start in Zbrush 4R4, go to "Vector Displacement Map" and create the "Diagnostic files"
Cheked: "Vd Tanget" "vd 32Bit" "vd SUV" and " vd SNormals"
I tried without the Smooth features, makes no changes for me.

Go to maya 2013.5 Import the OBJ mesh, change the render to Mental Ray and go to hypershade.

Create a Blinn. assign the Bitmap color to the diffuse color.

create a displacement node and link it into the BlinnSG node.
from "VectorDisplacment -> displacementShader"

Loading the Vector Displacement map into the "Vector Displacment section on the displacment node and change Vector space to Tangent.
"OutColor -> vectorDisplacment"

and then I hit render, and it looks all funky.

I did however read about the whole "Mental Ray Approximation Editor"
and by giving it a Subdivion Approx, I got closer to the sphere thing. however its not nearly there and it smooths the edges.
So I might not be on the right track, what do you think?




#1. The Bitmap showing the grid.

#2. Connecting the Vector Displacment node into the shaderengine.

#3. Adding the EXR file into the Displacment node.




I'm sorry. I probably messed up all over ^.^
Could anyone send me their maya file with the correct connection and the working render?
Would love to troubleshoot where my error is. Or to see if my maya is just being weird.

I guess that's right. I didn't get perfect sphere from diagnostics files either.
But them I tried with a with a object I sculpted and it worked.



Try your object!
Also smooth the normals of your object in Normals> Soften Edge.
I also have a problem that sometimes I get perfect smooth displacement and sometimes I get very faceted displacement.

It seems to work on a standard object. =)

I was just worried there would be small errors, since I couldn't get the displacment diagnostic to work.

Thanks again for your help, will keep moving forward and hope it dosen't break along the way ^.^
