Problems with Maya displacement mapping

I've done a fair bit of research into this but don't seem to be able to find any forum posts for this post-2010, so thought I'd just ask myself.

I'm having that problem with displacement mapping in Maya 2012 where I'm getting gaps between the edges of the model. I know it's to do with the displacement off the face normal, and I've bevelled the edges of my model and that kind of works. The problem is that bevelling in Maya is by no means sound in itself, and it's causing problems with my geometry. So I'm essentially fixing a problem with another problem.

Does anyone have a solid fix for this? I've tried using approximation nodes but to be honest I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing.
