Damian Nenow clouds in Maya

Any ideas on how to achieve these kind of clouds in Maya?

Not sure if I remember exact details of this technique, but the hard part is getting pre-baked subsurface illumination into sprites/particles. This is easy with 3delight but not with mentalray.

With 3delight you can bake cloud radiosity into either 2d map and use it as color for emited particles, or to 3d pointcloud and read this directly in sprites shader.
I used pointcloud technique long time ago rendering sugar cubes (crystal shaped particles getting prebaked SSS from cube) ...

if you go for the Nenow approach you could bake the illumination of a volume like geometry and then emit particles that will inherit the color of the volume like object thus simulating illumination on the sprites

Elementacular is a cloud shader but it does not have the flexibility of Nenow approach.
