Animate hair length guides

Is there a way to animate the length of guides in the hair object?

I am trying to create an animated iris of an eye and have some hair objects on the inside of a small cylinder. It sort of was working until I found out I couldn't animate the length of the hair guides. I am using the length attribute in the hair material to create some variation so don't really want to use that to animate the iris opening and closing.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think there are three things you can do.
Change the direction of your hair so it grows inward. Let the guides meet in the center and use scale for the hair-do and lenght to control the iris.
Keep it as it is and create an empty polygon object. Drop the object in the Editing link field under Guides. This will create a point for each point in your guides. Edit the outer Polygon Points and the Guide points will follow. In that case it would work best with segment set to one.
However you will have to control both outside and inside. thus points and cylinder.
If you combine 1 and 2 you only will have to control the iris with the polygon points.
Thus grow from out to in. Keep Length for hair-do. Use the editing link to control Iris.
