This is portrait I painted of my cousin. I wanted the portrait to be in the style of the Old Masters such as Rembrandt. To do this I depicted the figure in three-quarter lighting against a dark background. This set up is characteristic of Old Master portrait painting and so allows the viewer to understand the historical references in my work.
