Change the shape of control objects in Curve Flow?

I saw a tutorial on using curve flow to simulate a school of fish with a footnote saying this could be used to simulate cows or sheep.
Cows and sheep of course don't fly so their x position would somewhere near the curve but y position should be stuck to the curve. No problem, just scale the control circles down to very small on their y-axis but this cannot be done.

Is there a way this could be achieved? Preferably just be modifying Curve Flow. Writing a custom MEL script from scratch is a bit beyond me at this stage.
