Lighting Issues with Keyframed Animation

I'm trying to create an animation of my Etch A Sketch model rotation. To do this, I am keying the Rotate Y value of the group of polygon meshes that is my Etch A Sketch model. Before I key any of the values, manually rotating the model and rendering a given frame looks fine, but once there are keyframes, a peculiar lighting issue arises.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Would you happen to be using final gather in this render? If so, that, or other global illumination setting may be causing issues with the consistency of your lighting. It may also be possible that the UV's on your object need some attention.

Here are a few articles that may help you with your final gather issue:

Thank you for responding to my question. I ended up switching renderers from Maya Software to mental ray and then it looked fine, so I don't understand what the problem was with the Maya Software renders of my scene, but I managed to work around it.
