Cel Shading?

Okay guys( and gals! ), the bottom line is that I've just had the privilige of watching the Ghost in the Shell TV series...and I wanna do some Cel-shading!

Can this be done in Blender? What are the limitations? Is it faster to render using a Cel-shader than with regular rendering?

And gawddarnit - those Tachikomas sure are cute!

You should check the docs (or the material dialog...) before posting:

Unhappy

Well, I did actually check the website...but not enough it would seem.

Hmmm...cool. But I wonder just how well it can do cel shading - I can't seem to find any pictures that show Anime-quality potential...

Hmm. It says Blender was only used for particle effects. The other examples are kewl though

If you watch the making-of, you'll see that the rendering was done in blender aswell.

this sentence is a bit tricky, but it can be interpretated in two ways.
"while the 3-D was done in Maya and rendered with toon shading and Particle effects were done with Blender"

insert a comma after Maya, and you'll read it differently.

I realized that line was a little ambigious, so I read on and it said: " The Robot was done in Maya while Blender was used for the particle effects." Hence why I commented. Doesn't matter though. Will have to look at the making-of later. Was veeery slow to view right now.
One thing I would like to see in Blender is variable linewidth.

Or maybe not... I'm a bit confused now that I watched the making-of again. Nevermind. If you really want to know, ask the author :o)

I cann't find the link to the old (archived) NaN website. But if you ever find it, there is a tutorial for toon shading with nice screen shots.

Yup, that's what I was talking about. Toon shading doesn't get any easier than that !!

As for an update, you might whant to check this page of the manual

I had done a lot of research on this, and tried a bunch of methods.

First, I tried one that I had found in a foreign language..

http://www.kino3d.com/tutorial/cel-shading/toon.html

Which returned ->

Then I found the one above by flawedperfect, which I learned a lot from.

Then I tried this one-
http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ottoa...T/TUTORIAL.html

These are some tests I did using the above two methods together in certain ways..
http://roshtaria.d2g.com/ashura/sca...shadehead01.png
(The model is /NOT/ mine. If this is a problem, I can remove it-> But it was picked and used for tests/example purposes only.)

The hardest part is to get the tones to match anime specifically, especially in the skin areas.

I also found this by googling-

You might want to check this python script to.
http://www3.sympatico.caemillio.aquirre/

You'll need Blender 2.36 and a SWF converter if you want to change to somthing else.

EXAMPLE 1

EXAMPLE 2
