Maybe a firewall issue?

Break it out to a simple scene referencing the huge objects. (scene management.. which is a whole other issue)
And/or save as mb and try it again.
What version of Maya?

Start the batch render, and check the output folder to see if there are image files created. This command usually just means that the batch render can't open a port to maya, so it can spit the progress into the script editor. Even with this error the background process should be running just fine, you'll only have to kill it trough the Task Manager if you decide, since Maya has no connection to that process without the command port.
