Cool Cleaning up a Bad Head Mesh?

Dear CGTalk,

I just ventured into the formidable world of 3D modelling, by diving headfirst into shallow waters and try to model the human head. To make matters worse, I decided to try and model my OWN head, something that proved even harder to do.

Results are as followed in wireframe:



Shaded/Smoothed:


As you can see, it's a complete mess, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the wireframe is completely messy (edges all over the place, etc). What I was wondering, is if there is a way or method to "clean up" the mesh, to make it more suitable for further editing, texturing and animation.

Also, any tutorials or guides that might help me get a better modelling workflow would be appreciated.

hey gustav!

-i don't think this is so bad for a first head. and doing yourself is a good exercise, it's easier to see where the faults are, because you know what yourself, looks like.

there are ways to re-topologyse meshes, but i think you would learn quite alot from looking at other peoples wire's. how they model the "main" muscles of a face and keeping edgeloops all the way around the eyes and mouth.
armando from here, got an amazing site showing of nice wireframes and explanes some theory behind his work.
you can find his thread here...

but like i (and probally most others) would say... try search for tuts, either here or on some of the other big forums. you will find plenty.

Here's a few really superb tutorials by Ryan Kittleson, about the most thorough and clear organic modeling tuts I've seen so far:

He goes over in detail some of the principles of modeling with good animation topology, a lot more depth than any of the other info I've seen. Really great informative stuff.
