Doghead Peak, Carl Raillard (2D)

Title: Doghead Peak
Name: Carl Raillard
Country: United States
Software: Photo-Paint

This is an illustration for an article I wrote for an outdoor journal. Drawn from memory with pen and ink on Letramax paper, scanned in, and tweaked in CorelDRAW 7 and Photo-Paint 7. The picture is marked to show how to climb a remote mountain in Yosemite N. P. by its easiest route. I want this piece to be simple and bright, with just a hint of playful cartooniness. Although this piece is done (shipped out the door) I'd still appreciate some feedback ... especially about the talus field in the foreground.

Nice sketch. Reminds me of Ron Cobb's style of cartooning. I like the depth of field you get by varying the line width. Maybe could use a figure or two scaling the rock, just to give an idea of scale.

Ouch! That's a good idea. I've done stuff like that on previous assignments -- add a little man on the mountain, or tuck in a bear in the bushes, etc. I agree, a little climber would've helped set the scale on this Doghead piece.

I also wanted to mention, to anyone who is interested, that I often use another program when planning pictures such as this. The program is called Terrain Navigator Pro. It's a map program, which can generate 3D output. Here's a sample of what it does:
I find it useful to turn 3D models like this around, to help perk my memory of the lay of the land, before I begin drawing.
