Question How to isolate specific areas of UVs to apply a disp map?

I know one can load an image in the Displace Mod and control various things afterwards. Problem is, by using a Texture Image, you're both delimiting the affected area, and also providing the texture the displace mod will use. But what if you wanted to use the Clouds Texture type instead, but not in the whole mesh, just some specific area?

What if the area was way more complex than a square. Wouldn't it be better to use the help of a Node setup like the ones used by Andrew Price here and here in his "Create Realistic Materials with Cycles"? In both Nodes setups, the top image is used to affect the Displacement.
Just brainstorming about it...

Any ideas?
