Problem with the Move Tool in Component Mode

One of my students is trying to use the move tool and it works fine in object mode but not in component mode. The manipulator handle is there and the arrow/ring/box turns yellow like you've clicked it, but when you drag the mouse the components don't move. It's the same for the rotate and scale tools as well. We've tried resetting the tools and resetting the preferences for the scene, restarting Maya and restarting the computer and nothing has helped. Does anyone have other suggestions?

What program are you using?
I like to learn.

Her student is using Maya, Dylan.

Could you maybe detail the scene and the objects a little more?

Does this happen on just one object, the entire scene, or on that computer?

We're using Maya 2012 and it happens on every object in any scene, and only on one computer. He can move/rotate/scale objects if they're in object mode. but he can't with vertices, edges, faces or CVs in component mode.

Well if deleting the preferences file didn't help, you might just want to try reinstalling Maya on that system.

can you post a screen shot of the issue?

I'm not sure a screenshot would help. Everything looks completely normal. The selected components simply don't move when you try to move them. You pull on one of the arrows of the translate manipulator and it turns yellow, just like it's supposed to, but nothing happens.
