Rendering commercial airliners

Can anyone point me in the right direction of lighting and rendering aircrafts flying in the sky above clouds. I'm using 3d max 2013 and have iray and vray at my disposal.

I'm also looking for lighting rig set-ups and render settings as well as a place to get hi-res background Images with hdri images to match. Or would it be better to creat my own?

If I can get close to this I would be happy

Any help world be great.

Jeff patton is a master with Iray. You might want to check his site.

Like most shiny things (phones, cars, teapots) it's all about the reflections. Give it something pretty to reflect and you're 95% of the way there. That target render you have is almost entirely reflections. *

* It's a funny old CG idea we have that "reflections" and "light" are somehow different things. Obviously in reality they aren't - when a light is lighting something, what you see when you look at that object IS reflected light, only very diffused and glossy so it doesn't appear to be a mirror.

Video Co-pilot did a rendering with a airline and Element 3d.

Marcin Gruszczyk (pokoy) has some wonderful aviation stuff he did for Lufthansa. If I remember correctly the backgrounds and HDRs were shot at the same time by the photographer, and he did use some Vue to add some added detail to the shots.

Check out the link in the thread here for more information on the texturing, lighting, setup, etc.
