Disappearing act...Shader transparency problem

Hi--

In the past I've keyed the transparency attribute of simple color shaders in order to make the assigned object disappear.

This time I decided to do something a bit more sophisticated by actually using a bitmap in the color channel and a grayscale version of the same bitmap in the bump channel. Then I keyed the transparency to disappear, but the object merely changes appearance slightly and doesn't disappear. I've included a before transparency and after transparency screenshot for reference. Incidentally, the object in question is the upper pipe.

I've searched the forums, but haven't turned up a fix yet. Or am I headed down the wrong path?

Any suggestions? All help appreciated!

Hey, wait a minute--I just shot this same scene in Mental ray, just for the hell of it, and take a look at the screenshot. This is what I was expecting the Maya Software rendering to look like. I didn't make any other changes, just switched renderers.

Now I'm really confused.

Even with transparency the object may still have reflection and high lights. If you use MR, check out the cut out opacity attribute.
