I read a while back in an fxguide TV podcast that The Foundry was coming up with a competitor software to rival Adobe Phtoshop!!

I think this is exciting news, but seriously guys ... a threat for Autodesk?
It's a start yes, but they have a long way ahead before they can reach Autodesk.

However, I hope this continues and maybe one day we will actually have some competitive alternatives to chose from.

Now THAT would be awesome. I always suprised there isn't a real viable alternative to PS around like there is to 3D software. And no, Gimp doesn't count .

I would love to see that as well. It would be great to have a Photoshop alternative that is specifically tailored for 3d use.

I think you are referring to Mari.

I know The Foundry have expressed interest in the idea of putting a more traditional 2d canvas within Mari. But like a lot of other cool feature requests it's a "we'll consider it after 2.0 gets released".

If they do implement it through it'll probably be using the Mari tool set, so if you don't like it's brush system or editing tools it's probably not for you.

years ago someone said that the reason there is no commercial photoshop alternative is because adobe has all patents.
