Also from Kon-tiki (great film) you have ILP's reel:




Think they used Houdini ocean toolkit for the large open sea stuff (HOT exists as a plugin for 3ds max and maya aswell) and Naiad for the small scale stuff.

None of these solutions are 'free' if you don't own have access to any of software.
If this only a 'for fun' project than maybe Houdini apprentice or Blender
are the way to go. Everything else will be more $$.
