How can I weld a mesh and remove the internal overlap of objects?

Not sure this is the right place to post. I'm looking to combine multiple objects into one mesh, and remove the parts that overlap as the same time. The object will be glass and transparent - so I want the mesh to be a uniform skin with no internal parts of the objects showing through. Is there a quick way to do this - like a subtract function, similar to say pathfinder in Illustrator?

Have you tried Nitroman's Magic Merge (free plugin) ?

if you have zbrush to hand the new boolean is your friend. Its a great tool to prepare organic models for 3dprinting.
